How to Structure a Page So an AI Answer Can Use It

A long-form guide to page structure for retrieval: what makes a passage usable on its own, why the first eighty words decide most of it, and the structural habits that quietly make a page unquotable.

Systems that generate answers do not read a page the way a person does, and they rarely use all of it. They retrieve a piece. Everything below is about making sure the piece they retrieve makes sense without the rest of the page attached to it.

The short version

Answer the question in the first two sentences, make every section legible on its own, name things the same way everywhere, and put the qualifications next to the claims rather than at the bottom of the page.

The unit is the passage, not the page

A retrieval system typically works with chunks: sections of a document, indexed and scored separately. That has an unglamorous consequence. A brilliant argument that only works if you have read the four hundred words above it is, from the retrieval system’s point of view, an incomplete fragment — and an incomplete fragment is a risky thing to quote.

The practical test is blunt: take any section of your page, delete everything else, and read what is left. If it still answers a question a person would actually ask, the section is usable. If it starts with "This is why that matters", it is not.

The first eighty words do most of the work

The opening of a page is disproportionately valuable, for the same reason the opening of a news story is: it is where a direct answer is expected to be. A page that opens with three paragraphs of context before defining its own subject has spent its most quotable real estate on throat-clearing.

Name things the same way, everywhere

Internal inconsistency is expensive. If a product is called three different things across a site, every mention is slightly weaker evidence that they are all the same thing. The fix is boring and effective: pick one name, one description, one category, and repeat them without variation on every page that mentions the subject. Synonyms are for prose style, not for the sentence that defines what you are.

Structured data, used honestly

Schema.org markup states in machine-readable form what a page already says. That is its whole job. It is worth adding for the page types it genuinely fits — an article, an FAQ where the questions are really on the page, a product with a real price — and it is worth keeping accurate, because markup that disagrees with the visible page is a liability rather than a signal.

Four habits that quietly make a page unquotable

  • Pronouns doing heavy lifting across section boundaries — "it", "this approach", "the above" — so a lifted passage refers to something that is not there.
  • A definition that only exists in the meta description or the page title, and never in the body.
  • Numbers with no date attached, which cannot be safely repeated a year later.
  • The single most useful sentence on the page rendered inside an image.

How to tell whether any of this worked

You cannot read the retrieval system’s mind, so measure the observable thing: fix a set of prompts a real buyer would type, check them on a schedule, and record what came back — whether you appeared, whether you were cited, and how you were described. Being described inaccurately is a finding too, and it is usually a naming problem on your own site.
